What is abnormal bleeding?

In a healthy menstrual cycle, you should have a period that lasts up to seven days every 24-38 days. Abnormal bleeding occurs when your period lasts longer than eight days or if your cycle is longer or shorter than the normal range.

Additionally, if you bleed between periods or after sex, or if you continue to bleed after menopause, you should make an appointment at Artemis OB/GYN. 

Abnormal bleeding also includes heavy periods. Your periods are abnormally heavy if you need to change your tampon or pad more than once an hour for several consecutive hours. Anemia is another sign of abnormal bleeding. 

What causes abnormal bleeding?

Many young women experience irregular periods when they begin menstruation. Also, as you approach menopause, your periods and menstrual cycle might change. Many conditions cause abnormal bleeding, such as:

• Abnormal ovulation
• Fibroids
• Polyps
• Endometriosis
• Hormonal imbalances
• Polycystic ovary syndrome
• Miscarriage
• Ectopic pregnancy
• Uterine cancer

Your birth control, including oral contraceptives and intrauterine devices, can also cause irregular bleeding. 

How is the cause of abnormal bleeding diagnosed?

Artemis OB/GYN provides thorough exams and diagnostic testing to identify the cause of your abnormal bleeding. Your provider begins by reviewing your medical history, symptoms, and lifestyle. They also perform a pelvic exam and may take a Pap smear or order blood work.

In some cases, your doctor might order further testing, including ultrasound, hysteroscopy, or laparoscopy, to examine your reproductive organs in more detail. 

How is abnormal bleeding treated?

Artemis OB/GYN provides customized treatments to address the underlying cause of your abnormal bleeding. Depending on your needs, your provider might prescribe medication like oral contraceptives or gonadotropin-releasing hormone-agonists. You might also find that nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can relieve painful and heavy periods. 

Your provider might also suggest procedures like endometrial ablation or myomectomy to remove uterine fibroids.
