Ultrasound Evaluation Q & A

What is an ultrasound evaluation?

Ultrasounds are a type of diagnostic imaging study that uses sound waves to create images of your internal organs. Ultrasound equipment sends the sound waves into your body and records them as they bounce back off of your insides. The machine uses that information to create images of your body or your growing baby. Advances in medical technology have led to the ability to create 3D images and videos.

What does an ultrasound evaluation show my doctor?

Artemis OB/GYN uses ultrasounds to diagnose women’s health issues like fibroids, endometriosis, abnormal bleeding, and polyps. The providers might also use ultrasounds to check for signs of polycystic ovary syndrome.

They also use the test to monitor the development of pregnancy. For example, during your first trimester, your provider might order an ultrasound to confirm that you have a viable pregnancy and confirm the heartbeat.

In the second trimester, your obstetrician or midwife check the growth and development of your baby and look for signs of abnormalities. They can also confirm the sex of your baby and if you have a single baby or multiples.

During the last trimester, they use ultrasound to observe your baby’s movements and the placental location. An ultrasound can also show your provider if your baby is in the breech position or if you have any structural abnormalities that could cause complications during labor and delivery.

What happens during an ultrasound evaluation?

At Artemis OB/GYN, a certified sonographer performs the ultrasound in the convenience of the office. They spread a clear gel over your abdomen that helps the transducer slide over your skin smoothly and create clear images.

The transducer sends the waves into your body and collects the echoes as the waves bounce off your internal organs. The equipment translates the echoes into images that you can see on a screen in the treatment room.

Are ultrasounds safe?

Ultrasounds are safe for both you and your baby — they don’t use any radiation or other harmful energy. Ultrasounds are noninvasive and painless. You don’t need any time to recover and can return to your regular activities immediately after your appointment.
